Chapter 20

When Luke Fraser thought of private investigators, he pictured Magnum, with his flashy cars and chest hair, or Columbo, with his rumpled trench coat. Men with distinguishing appearances or affectations. Nat Kane wasn’t like that. He was five-ten, with neat but slightly long hair combed over to the side, and a face that was instantly forgettable. The kind of man you could meet at a party and not recognize ten minutes later. Nat claimed his looks were what made him so good. He was able to blend into a crowd and go unnoticed. Fraser didn’t care what worked for him, as long as he got the job done.

Nat arrived at the Crab Pit a couple of minutes early and took a seat opposite Fraser. He signaled a passing waitress and ordered the special plate and a diet soda. They’d done business in this seafood joint enough times that Nat knew his order before he even stepped in.

“I’m intrigued,” Nat said. “What kind of job can’t you discuss over the phone?”

Fraser recognized the opening gambit. Nat was looking for extra. He always did when the lines between legal and illicit were blurred.

“Nothing special. I just couldn’t talk with my kid in the back seat,” Fraser said.

Nat’s face dropped a little. He took a piece of bread from a basket on the table and took a bite. “So who am I looking at?”

“His name is Graham Masters. My daughter says he lives on Phillips Drive in Okotoks.”

Nat took out his phone and opened a memo app, adding the details.

“What’s he done?”

Fraser hesitated, looking around for anyone within earshot, then leaned in. “It’s personal.”

Nat perked up again and gave Fraser a knowing grin. “Need another hooker?”

It was Nat who had engaged the services of the prostitute used to frame Michael Tornielli. He’d hired her, coached her on her role and handled the payment. He’d even provided the GHB. Nothing could be traced back to Fraser.

“Maybe,” Fraser said. “All I know is that he’s British and his kid’s mom is dead. I found that out today.”

“Do you know where he works, how long he’s been in Canada…?”

Fraser took a sip of his vodka tonic. “No. I just came across him this afternoon.”

“Must have been one hell of a first impression if you’re ready to destroy him already. What did the guy do to you?”

“He humiliated me and got my kids kicked out of school,” Fraser said. He picked up a fork and squeezed the handle until his knuckles were white. “Ten grand a semester I pay that place, and the first time my kids step over the line, they kick them out.”

“Tell me about it,” Nat said, as his food arrived.

Fraser did. He recounted the entire episode, telling Nat how Masters had used sneaky, underhand tactics to set his girls up. Young Masters had goaded Madison into hitting her just so that she could try out her Jiu Jitsu shit on her and film the entire thing so that they could go home and have a good laugh about it.
